Red Escape

Red Escape is the classic form of the genre executed without embellishment. You are trapped in a series of three rooms and each one has to be solved on its own terms: gather the tools that are lying around, uncover the clues hidden in the space, apply logic to what the two of them together tell you, and open the way out. There is no timer and no threat, which puts all the weight on the puzzles themselves — they are intricate enough that finishing all three is a genuine achievement rather than a formality. The interaction is entirely mouse-driven, so searching a room properly means clicking on everything rather than steering a character around it.
